Dr. Lei Zhang is the Herbert Rabin Distinguished Professor of Civil Engineering and Director of the National Transportation Center at the University of Maryland – College Park (UMD). Dr. Zhang’s research focuses on innovative mobility solutions, urban sustainability, and next-generation transportation modeling and decision-support tools that are large-scale, real-time capable, and driven by big data. Dr. Zhang has published more than 250 peer-reviewed papers, 9 books and book chapters, and numerous technical reports. He has received external research funding support from NSF, US DOT, US DOE, FHWA, SHRP2, NCHRP, and other federal and state agencies and private foundations, exceeding $34 million. Dr. Zhang has served in leadership roles at many professional conferences, expert panels, editorial boards and professional societies. Most recently, he served as a member on the White House OSTP-NEC External Panel on President Obama’s 21st Century Clean Transportation System, and the Maryland State Transportation Innovation Council. Dr. Zhang is a recipient of the prestigious National Science Foundation CAREER Award, the TRB Fred Burggraf Award, U.S. Department of State APEC Science Prize, and many international best paper awards.
