Dr. Lei Zhang

Dr. Lei Zhang is an Associate Professor and Director of the National Transportation Center in the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering at the University of Maryland – College Park (UMD). He received his B.S. in Civil Engineering from Tsinghua University, and his M.S. degrees in Civil Engineering and Applied Economics and a Ph.D. degree in Transportation Engineering from the University of Minnesota. Dr. Zhang has published more than 200 peer-reviewed journal and conference papers on topics including transportation planning, transportation economics and policy, travel behavior, advanced travel demand modeling, transportation data and survey methods, and traffic operations. He has received external funding support from various U.S. Federal and State government agencies (e.g., NSF, U.S. and State DOTs, DOE, FHWA, SHRP2, NCHRP) and private foundations, exceeding $20 million. Dr. Zhang is a Member of four Transportation Research Board (TRB) Committees (Transportation Economics, Travel Behavior and Values, Transportation Network Modeling, and Travel Survey Methods) under the U.S. National Academy of Sciences. He recently served or is serving as the Chair of the Transportation Science and Logistics Cluster of the Institute for Operations Research and Management Sciences (INFORMS), Secretary of the World Society for Transport and Land Use Research (WSTLUR), Vice President of the Chinese Overseas Transportation Association (COTA), and Chair of several international conferences and U.S. Department of Transportation Expert Panels. Dr. Zhang is a recipient of the National Science Foundation CAREER Award, the TRB Fred Burggraf Award, and many international best paper awards.
